The shades of magic series is my all time favorite fantasy series. V. E Schwab transports us to London, unlike the one we know. London is split into red London, grey London, and white London. Only those with antari magic can transport between the different Londons. It is a story about controlling power and how power can be dangerous in the wrong hands. It is difficult to summarize the plot of this series and I honestly think it’s best to just dive right into it!

I started reading the series in high school but am currently reading the newest book, Threads of Power. I remember being gripped from page one by Schwab’s captivating voice and ability to craft a world like no other.

To give a quick glimpse of her writing :

“Everyone thinks I have a death wish, you know? But I dont want to die – dying is easy. No, I want to live, but getting close to death is the only way to feel alive. And once you do, it makes you realize that everything you were actually doing before wasn’t actually living. It was just making do. Call me crazy, but I think we do the best living when the stakes are high”

My favorite characters are Kell and Delilah Bard. Kell is an adopted prince and has the ability to travel between the different Londons. He is shy, sweet, and kind hearted.

Delilah is a clever and skilled thief. She is my favorite character ever. She does not trust people easily, she is ruthless, and knows how to defend herself. She dreams of becoming a pirate one day. Kell and Delilah cross paths and enter an adventure transversing between the London realms. It is the contrasting character between the two that make the book so lively and memorable.

I totally recommend this series to everyone who loves adventure and some good characters. I can’t wait to finish the newest book in the series and also maybe reread the other books too!
